The mission of the University of Tampere is to generate high-quality research and to develop Lifelong Learning approaches for various fields of society through a variety of graduate and post-graduate programmes. Teaching given at the School of Health Sciences is closely integrated into the scientific research programme in the field. The School strives for improving quality by acquiring systematic feedback from education and research. The School has clear operational goals and has gained international recognition. The School has about 400 students in its Master’s degree and 190 in Doctoral programmes. The School of Health Sciences offers Lifelong Learning postgraduate programmes leading to licentiate and doctorate degrees.

The School of Health Sciences is a multidisciplinary education and research unit. Our research focuses on the determinants of health, on the impacts and means of health promotion and prevention, on the health care system and health policy, on nursing and on the foundations of health and well-being.

The multidisciplinary nature of the School of Health Sciences and the variety of research groups enable a broad spectrum of studies and collaboration in the field of health sciences. Strategically important research fields are biostatistics, cancer epidemiology, ageing and family nursing. We have extensive collaboration with several national and international universities and research institutes. Currently our main domestic collaborators are the National Institute of Health and Welfare, the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health, the Finnish Cancer Registry, the Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority, the UKK Institute for Health Promotion.

The research activities in nursing science have are focused on family nursing, mental health nursing, nursing education and nursing administration. The aim has been to develop theory and research methods in these areas. Family nursing issues pertain to health (including mental health) and the well-being of families and individuals, their coping in everyday life, caring for self and others, and also family nursing for professionals. Research on education has concentrated on developing Lifelong Learning methods for teaching and learning nursing and for patient education. Nursing administration research has concentrated on developing health care organisations, work and clinical supervision. Education based on research provides tools for Lifelong Learning issues concerning the continuing professional development of nursing staff, staff wellbeing and know-how through research in clinical supervision and the possibilities of peer support.
