The LVR-Hospital Essen is part of the faculty and the hospital of the university of Essen and Duisburg. The hospital consists of departments for adult psychiatry and psychotherapy, for dependent behavior and addiction medicine, for children and adolescents, for psychosomatic medicine and psychotherapy, and for forensic psychiatry.

The main current resarch areas in the fields of adult psychiatry and of addiction medicine include diagnosis and treatment of dementia, ADHD in adults, schizophrenia and cognition, treatment of opiate dependence, treatment of cannabis dependence, and use of anti-epileptic drugs in the treatment of alcohol dependence.
