Middlesex University is located in North London and is one of the largest universities in the UK. It has over 34,000 students studying on its courses worldwide. It has an internationally recognised Centre for Learner Managed Learning and a nationally recognised and nationally funded Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning in Mental Health and Social Work. It was awarded national recognition in 2005 for its excellence in mental health teaching, along with a grant for £3.5 million, which involves a focus on involvement of targeted learners [disadvantaged groups] and inter-agency working in programme development and implementation, innovative teaching and learning practices and strategies for learner support. It has an international reputation in Lifelong Learning and is a leading research institution in the field of Lifelong Learning. Middlesex co-ordinated and managed EMILIA, EU’s largest ever funded research and intervention project on lifelong learning, social inclusion and mental health at €3.4M. Middlesex has extensive local, national and international links in mental health with a wide variety of bodies and agencies. It is closely associated with two large London NHS Trusts (Camden and Islington NHS Trust, and Barnet Enfield and Haringey NHS Trust); it has worked very intensively through a service user advisory board with 4 mental health service user NGOs (Barnet Voice, EMU - Enfield Mental health User group – IbuG (Islington Borough user group, and HUN (Haringey User Network); it also works closely with a nationally recognised charity MHF – Mental Health Foundation.
